Software Quality Assurance Engineer

Washington, DC
Full Time
Mid Level

Savan Group is seeking a hands-on Software Quality Assurance Engineer to support HUB, an enterprise web application used to manage and report on Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) processes and workflows. This is a QA-focused role responsible for ensuring application quality, reliability, usability, and accessibility through manual functional, regression, smoke, and exploratory testing. The selected candidate will validate end-to-end workflows and role-based permissions, identify potential regressions, document defects, verify fixes, and support release readiness.

The ideal candidate understands how modern web applications operate across the user interface, APIs, backend services, and databases. The role also includes technical troubleshooting and targeted front-end fixes as needed. Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React or a comparable front-end framework is important, while familiarity with Material UI (MUI), React Query/TanStack Query, Azure DevOps, and Section 508/WCAG accessibility standards are highly desirable. The successful candidate will take ownership of quality activities, work independently, and collaborate effectively with developers, program leadership, testers, and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Quality Assurance and Testing

  • Review requirements, acceptance criteria, and proposed changes to identify gaps, edge cases, regression risks, and potential impacts on existing application functionality.
  • Plan and execute manual functional, regression, smoke, and exploratory testing for new features, defect fixes, and releases.
  • Validate end-to-end workflows across user roles, including permissions, edit rights, field visibility, approvals, data validation, and authorization-dependent behavior.
  • Develop reusable test cases with prerequisites, test data, expected results, and supporting evidence.
  • Reproduce, document, and track defects with clear steps, expected versus actual results, severity, affected workflows, and supporting evidence.
  • Retest resolved defects and perform regression testing to verify fixes and identify unintended side effects.
  • Evaluate user-facing functionality for usability and accessibility, including keyboard navigation, focus behavior, labels, error messages, and applicable Section 508/WCAG considerations.
Technical Troubleshooting and Release Validation
  • Use browser developer tools, API responses, application logs, and basic SQL queries to investigate issues across the user interface, APIs, backend services, data, permissions, and environments.
  • Collaborate with developers and stakeholders to investigate defects, assess technical risks, and recommend practical improvements to application behavior.
  • Maintain accurate defect records, test results, work-item updates, and supporting evidence in Azure DevOps, Jira, or a comparable platform.
  • Support release readiness and post-deployment verification in Test and production environments, prioritizing critical workflows, role-sensitive functionality, and high-risk changes.
  • Maintain regression coverage by identifying high-risk workflows for recurring release testing and communicating unresolved quality risks.
Targeted Front-End Development
  • Investigate and implement targeted front-end fixes and enhancements using JavaScript/TypeScript and React or a comparable framework.
  • Troubleshoot and improve component behavior, forms, tables, filtering, validation, responsive layouts, and client-side data-fetching behavior.
  • Where applicable, work with Material UI (MUI), MUI Data Grid, and React Query/TanStack Query to investigate UI behavior, loading and error states, caching, query invalidation, and state synchronization.
  • Validate code changes through appropriate functional and regression testing to ensure fixes do not disrupt existing functionality.
Required Qualifications
  • Professional experience testing, building, troubleshooting, or supporting web applications in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing manual functional and regression tests, translating requirements into test cases, and documenting reproducible defects.
  • Experience validating end-to-end workflows, forms, data validation, role-based permissions, and edge cases.
  • Ability to independently identify potential regression impacts and design test scenarios beyond stated acceptance criteria.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and modifying JavaScript/TypeScript web applications, including React or a comparable front-end framework, and implementing targeted fixes.
  • Working knowledge of browser developer tools and basic API concepts for investigating application behavior.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage testing activities independently, maintain clear documentation, and collaborate effectively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with React and TypeScript in modern web applications.
  • Familiarity with Material UI (MUI), MUI Data Grid, or comparable component libraries.
  • Experience with React Query/TanStack Query or similar client-side data-fetching and server-state management libraries.
  • Experience testing REST APIs and applications supported by .NET or comparable backend services.
  • Basic SQL proficiency and experience with SQL Server or similar relational databases.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Jira, or comparable tools for defect tracking, test documentation, and release traceability.
  • Familiarity with Section 508/WCAG accessibility standards and accessibility testing.
  • Exposure to Postman, Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or comparable API/UI testing tools. Automation experience is beneficial but is not the primary focus.
  • Experience supporting federal government applications or projects with formal testing, evidence, release approval, and production verification requirements.
  • Experience working in Agile environments, including sprint delivery, defect triage, and release readiness reviews.
Role Emphasis
The anticipated allocation of effort is approximately:
  • 65% — Quality assurance and testing
  • 20% — Technical troubleshooting and release quality
  • 15% — Targeted front-end development

Actual allocations may vary based on project priorities, defect volume, and release schedules

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability
Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029
Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
